WHAT IS A CITIZEN? I AM A CITIZEN was a collaborative project mounted by Imprenta, an art, cultural, and social space in Los Angeles founded by Camilo Ontiveros, Michelle Dizon, Wu Tsang, and Nicolau Vergeiro in 2009. The project began with a dialogical process with community that engaged with question of protest, politics, immigrant rights, the role of the artist, and the semiotics of protest. Imprenta produced 1000 signs composed of simple black text on a white field that read “WHAT IS A CITIZEN?” on one side, and “I AM A CITIZEN” on the other side. These signs were posted around the city of Los Angeles and distributed during the 2019 May Day protests in downtown LA.
